Let \(x_{n+1}=F(x_ 1,...,x_ n)\) be the equation of a surface in \(\mathbb R^{n+1}\), with \(F(0)=0\). The authors study the \(L^ p\) boundedness of the maximal function operator given by \[ M_ Ff(x)=\sup_{0<h_ i<\delta}\left(\frac{1}{\prod^{n}_{1}h_ i}\int_{0<y_ i<h_ i}| f(x'-y,x_{n+1}-F(y))| \,dy\right), \] where \(h_ i>0\), \(x=(x',x_{n+1})\in\mathbb R^{n+1}\) and \(y\in\mathbb R^ n\). Theorem 1: If \(f\in C^{2+\varepsilon}\) in a neighbourhood of 0 for some \(\varepsilon >0\), and \(\partial^ 2F(0)/\partial x^ 2_ i\neq 0\) for \(i=1,...,n\), then there is \(\delta >0\) such that \(M_ F\) is bounded on \(L^ p(\mathbb R^{n+1})\), \(p>1\). Theorem 2: If \(F\in C^ 2\) in a neighbourhood of 0, \(n\geq 2\), and the matrix \((\partial^ 2F(0)/\partial x_ i\partial x_ j)_{i,j\in \Lambda}\) is nonsingular for any nonempty proper subset of \(\{\) 1,...,n\(\}\), then there is \(\delta >0\) such that \(M_ F\) is bounded on \(L^ p(\mathbb R^{n+1})\), \(p>1\). Theorem 3: If \(F\) is a polynomial of degree at most 2, then \(M_ F\) is bounded on \(L^ p(\mathbb R^{n+1})\), \(p>1\), whenever \(0<\delta \leq \infty\).
