Based on results given by \textit{V. Zizler} [Dissertationes Math., Warszawa 87, 1-33 (1971; Zbl 0231.46036)] it is shown that for a Banach space X embedded into \(L^ 1+L^{\infty}(\mu)\) the following are sufficient conditions for X to have an equivalent norm which is uniformly rotund in every direction: \(\mu\) is positive and \(\sigma\)-finite, or \(\mu\) is separable and X is reflexive. Consequently symmetric and reflexive Banach function spaces over \({\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{Z}}\) and Orlicz spaces \(L^{\Phi}(\mu)\) over separable or \(\sigma\)-finite measure spaces with convex \(\Phi\) have this property. As a corollary it is shown that (most) Musielak-Orlicz spaces have isonormal structure.
