A new proof of Motoo's combinatorial central limit theorem [\textit{M. Motoo}, Ann. Inst. Stat. Math. 8, 145-154 (1957; Zbl 0084.138)] is given using a method of \textit{Ch. Stein} [Proc. 6th Berkeley Sympos. math. Statist. Probab., Univ. Calif. 1970, 2, 583-602 (1972; Zbl 0278.60026) and a combinatorial method of \textit{E. Bolthausen} [Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 66, 379-386 (1984; Zbl 0563.60026)]. This proof is shorter than Motoo's and other well-known proofs [e.g.: \textit{J. Hajek}, Ann. Math. Stat. 32, 506-623 (1961; Zbl 0107.134)].
