This paper investigates the Harnack metric in proper subdomains of euclidean space. The infinitesimal form of this metric is indicated and then used to derive a sharp upper bound in terms of the quasihyperbolic metric. Next a formula is given which describes the effect of removing a relatively closed polar subset from the domain. Then the distance between two antipodal points on the circle of symmetry in an annulus is computed. Finally, plane domains are considered and the Harnack metric is compared to the Bergman, Carathéodory, and Poincaré metrics.
