Conditions for the existence of the cepstrum (the inverse Fourier transform of the logarithm of a given sequence) of a discrete signal defined on an M-dimensional lattice are obtained. The analysis is carried out for three situations: the support of the signal is arbitrary; the support is on a half space and the support is a bounded set on a half space. The relationship between the existence of the cepstrum of a discrete transfer function and the bounded-input bounded-output stability is also considered. The results are proved by the use of some deep facts from general Banach algebras with a unit. We point out the fact that for a one-dimensional cepstrum by the use of the same mathematical tools similar results have been given by \textit{E. Krajnik} and \textit{B. Pondelicek} [Circuit theory and design 85, Proc. Eur. Conf., Prague/Czech. 1985, 414-416 (1985; Zbl 0579.94004)]. It is interesting to remark that the main fact which insures the existence of the cepstrum, in one or in more dimensions, is the nonvanishing of the Z-transform on the unit ball and the continuity of the phase function. In section 7 of the paper Fréchet derivatives of the operators used throughout the paper, inversion, cepstrum and inverse cepstrum, are calculated. It is clear that these derivatives can be of great use when estimating the filter sensitivities. As a conclusion, we think that this paper represents a major contribution in the area of multidimensional discrete systems by using adequate mathematical tools and furnishing unexpected relationships between the cepstrum properties and the filter stability.
