The author shows that the notion of a skew-simplicial group (abbr. SS- group) provides a useful conceptual framework for studying cyclic [\textit{A. Connes}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 296, 953-958 (1983; Zbl 0534.18009) and \textit{B. L. Tsygan}, Usp. Mat. Nauk 38, No.2 (230), 217-218 (1983; Zbl 0518.17002)] and other objects [the author, \textit{S. V. Lapin} and \textit{Yu. P. Solov'ev}, Vestn. Mosk. Univ. Ser. I 1987, No.4, 28-32 (1987; Zbl 0623.16009), and \textit{J.-L. Loday}, Adv. Math. 66, 119-148 (1987; Zbl 0627.18006)]. It is proved that each SS-group is an extension of some simplicial group by one of the subgroups of a special SS-group W. Moreover, some connections with equivariant topology are found. The same results were also obtained by \textit{Z. Fiedorowicz} and \textit{J.-L. Loday} [Crossed simplicial groups and their associated homology (to appear)].
