The classical Calderón-Zygmund theory provides conditions under which a singular integral operator is bounded on \(L^ p\), \(1<p<\infty\). Here we develop variants of the theory which, in the convolution case, give sharp minimal sufficient conditions for an operator to be bounded on \(L^ p\), \(p_ 0<p<p'_ 0\). In particular we obtain the following refinement of the Hörmander multiplier theorem: let \(\phi \in C^{\infty}_ c\), \(\phi\equiv 1\) on \(\{\) \(1\leq | z| \leq 2\}\). Let \(m\in L^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\). Suppose that \(\sup_{j\in U}(\| m(2^ j.)\phi (.)\|_{m_ p}+\| m(2^ j.)\phi (.)\|_{n_{\epsilon}})<\infty\) for some \(\epsilon >0\) (where \(m_ p\) is the \(L^ p\) multiplier norm). Then \(m\in M_ r\), \(p<r<p'\). Applications are given, for example, to the lacunary maximal Bochner- Riesz operator on \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\).
