This monograph is an introduction to the methods of cell-to-cell mappings and their application to the study of global behavior of (both deterministic and stochastic) nonlinear systems. The leading idea of these methods is to divide the (continuum) state space into cells and study the corresponding cell-to-cell mappings. These methods are computer-oriented and make it possible to obtain concrete results for highly nonlinear systems (location of attractors and domains of attraction, determination of their statistical properties etc.). The theory of cell-to-cell mappings has been (and still is being) developed by the present author and his collaborators; there are many open problems to be solved by pure mathematicians, numerical analysts and computer scientists. There are fourteen chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction and overview. The remaining chapters may be grouped in three parts. The first part (chapters 2 and 3) treats point mappings. The second part (chapters 4--9) is devoted to simple cell-to-cell mappings and their applications. The core of the book is the third part dealing with generalized \((=``multivalued'')\) cell-to-cell mappings. All parts are supplied with applications to the study of concrete nonlinear systems. Summing up, we can say that this is a very important, interesting and useful book which can be recommended to scientists and engineers interested in the global analysis of nonlinear systems.
