Let X be a nonsingular projective variety of dimension d, defined over the complex field. In the paper varieties X whose canonical bundle is not numerically effective are studied. This is done by using systematically Mori's theory on extremal rays and the Kawamata-Shokurov base point freeness theorem. This theorem gives a normal variety Y together with a morphism \(\phi: X\to Y\) which contracts an extremal ray R and which describes the structure of X. If R is numerically effective (nef), \(\dim (Y)<\dim (X)\) and the general fibre of \(\phi\) is a Fano variety. If R is not nef, \(\phi\) is a birational morphism. In this case one works under the assumption that the locus E where \(\phi\) is not isomorphism has dimension d-1 (note that it is always \(\dim(E)\geq d/2\) in view of a Ionescu result). In the special case \(d=4\) a fairly detailed description of E is given; to this purpose, the conjectured condition \((-K_ E)^ 3\leq 72\) (see {\S} 4) has been proved by the same author in a following paper. Some examples are given to point out ``pathologies'' occurring as soon as \(d>3.\) Very similar results have been independently obtained by \textit{T. Ando} [cf. Invent. Math. 81, 347-357 (1985; Zbl 0554.14001)]. - Finally let us point out that the case \(d=4\), \(\dim(E)=2\) has been recently described by Y. Kawamata.
