Let V be a variety of associative algebras over a field and let V be defined by a system of multilinear polynomial identities. Every algebra A from V can be presented by generators and relations from the relatively free algebra of V. The main purpose of the paper under review is to give a formula for the group \(H^ 2_ V(A,M)\) of singular extensions in V with kernel in an A-bimodule. As a consequence, formulas are obtained for calculating the second cohomology groups of Hochschild and Harrison which allow to express these groups in many particular cases. The method of proofs is based on the technique of generalized Koszul complex. It turns out that for an acyclic Koszul complex every singular extension of A with kernel in itself can be lifted to a Gerstenhaber deformation in the variety V.
