This paper generalizes results from previous author's article [Commun. Math. Phys. 104, 49-75 (1986; Zbl 0612.76082)] and enables to treat several other physical systems. In particular, obtained results are applied to the incompressible limits of compressible fluids, quasigeostrophic approximations of the shallow water equations and the constant-pressure approximation (low-Mach-number) of combustion. The investigated class of quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems is of the form \[ A^ 0(t,x,u)u_ t+A^ j(t,x,u)u_{x_ j}+B(t,x,u)u+\lambda (C^ ju_{x_ j}+Du)=F(t,x) \] with a large parameter \(\lambda\). The initial-boundary-value problem is considered with the solid-wall boundary condition. A short-time existence theorem is proven and the solution u is shown to remain bounded independently of \(\lambda\) for a time independent of \(\lambda\) provided that u(0) and \(u_ t(0)\) are bounded independently of \(\lambda\) and certain structural conditions are satisfied. Solutions are shown to converge to the solutions of limiting equations as \(\lambda\to \infty\) for particular cases mentioned above.
