In quantum mechanis it is usual to separate out the constants of motion due to the invariance of the classical Hamiltonian under a group of translations in phase space. This paper discusses the algebras of such constants of motion in an abstract setting requiring i) a locally compact abelian group E, ii) a multiplier b and the associated bi-character \(\beta\) which brings in quantum mechanics through the Weyl operator W(g), \(g\in E.\) The authors study the von Neumann algebras generated by restrictions of the Weyl system to arbitrary closed subgroups of E.
