The primary objective of this two-part article is to present a simple and easy introduction in the theory and practice of the finite element method, and thereby provide the terminology and nomenclature in finite element analyses to those who are new to the method. In this first part, the method is introduced through the use of the Ritz models. One and two- dimensional model problems are described involving a number of examples. A discussion on interpolation functions referring to a linear triangular element and linear rectangular element is given. A table indicating six basic steps in the finite-element analysis of a typical problem is included.
