The scale type of the dependent and independent variables determines under some restrictions the general form of the psychophysical law [observation of \textit{R. D. Luce}, On the possible psychophysical laws. Psychol. Rev. 66, 81-95 (1959)]. The authors prove that the scale type of the dependent variable can be replaced in Luce's theory by the assumption that a certain statement involving the dependent variable is meaningful. The mathematical objects used in this model are functional equations.
