We present here a theorem dealing with the relations between the derivative of a function of bounded variation and those of its positive, negative and total variation functions. Further, given two functions of bounded variation f and g on an interval I, we define the notions of mutual singularity of f and g and of absolute continuity of f relative to g similar to those of measures and then present characterizations of these two properties in terms of the derivatives of f and g.
