The author defines the generalized type T of an entire function f(z). Let the expansion of f(z) in terms of a power series in p(z) (polynomial of degree \(\lambda\geq 1)\) be \[ f(z)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}q_ n(z)\{p(z)\}^{n-1} \] where \(q_ n(z)\) are uniquely determined polynomials of degree not more than \(\lambda\)-1. A formula for T in terms of the coefficients \(q_ n\) is obtained. In two theorems, necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of polynomials to be of best approximation to an entire function f are obtained.
