Let f be a real function on an interval I, \(\{I_ n\}^ a \)sequence of non overlapping intervals \(I_ n=[a_ n,b_ n]\). Let \(\Lambda\) denote a non-decreasing sequence \(\{\lambda_ n\}\) of positive real numbers such that \(\Sigma 1/\lambda_ n=\infty\). A function f is said to be q \(\Lambda\)-bounded variation (\(\Lambda\) BV) if, for every \(\{I_ n\}\), \(\Sigma | f(b_ n)-f(a_ n)| /\lambda_ n<\infty.\) This definition generalises the notion of bounded variation (BV) and is due to \textit{D. Waterman} [Studia Math. 44, 107-117 (1972; Zbl 0237.42001); errata, ibid. 44, 651 (1972; Zbl 0244.42009)]. When \(\lambda_ n=n\), \(\Lambda\) BV is called harmonic bounded variation (HBV). It appears that some important classical theorems, valid for Jordan class BV, find HBV their natural setting. In this paper the author proves that the equation \[ \lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{S_ n'(x_ 0,f)}{n}=[f(x_ 0+0)-f(x_ 0- 0)]/\pi \] holds for any function \(f\in HBV\) at any point \(x_ 0\) where \(S_ n(x_ 0,f)\) denotes the nth partial sum q the Fourier series of a \(2\pi\)-periodic function f. \textit{P. Csillag} [Mat. és. Fiz. Lapok 27, 301-308 (1918)] proved this result for \(f\in BV\). As Wiener's bounded p- variation class is contained in HBV, the above theorem also generalises a result of \textit{B. I. Golobov} [Mat. Zametki 13, 19-28 (1972; Zbl 0256.42005)].
