Let A be a C *-algebra with multiplier algebra M(A). Then A is said to be hereditarily cohomologically trivial (HCT) if for each C *-subalgebra B of A and each derivation \(\delta\) from B to A there is an element m in M(A) such that \(\delta (b)=mb-bm\) for all elements b in B. The paper is devoted to the proof of the following result which is a step towards the identification of HCT algebras. Let A be a C *-algebra with continuous trace and suppose that every irreducible representation of A acts on a separable Hilbert space. Then A is HCT if and only it is the direct sum of a commutative C *-algebra, a restricted direct sum of a sequence \((A_ n)\) of C *-algebras with \(A_ n\) isomorphic to \(Co(X_ n)\times M_{r_ n}\) where \(X_ n\) is a Stonean, locally compact space, and a restricted direct sum of infinite-dimensional elementary C *-algebras.
