An exposition of the Frenet theory of curves in Euclidean 3-space and Minkowski space-time (in the time-like case) is given with some emphasis on Cartan's approach using Lie transformation groups. [Reviewer's comment: While the description of Frenet's theory is the same as in a usual first course in differential geometry, the presentation of Cartan's approach only remains rudimentary. For the application of this method to the theory of curves more comprehensive and motivating expositions can be found in several monographs on differential geometry (mainly by European authors). The only quotations given by the author are volume 2 of Spivak's introductions and O'Neill's `Semi-Riemannian geometry'.]
