The approximation problem for 3-dimensional (3-D) recursive digital filters) is discussed. The filter is prescribed via a local space-state model and the approximation is developed in the frame of 3-D separable denominator rational functions. First, for such filters necessary and sufficient conditions for separately local controllability and observability are given (Theorems 1 and 2). Then, a procedure for approximating 3-D filters by 3-D separable denominator ones is developed. Also, the problem to obtain a minimum roundoff noise is discussed. Finally, two examples illustrating the exposed theory are given. We think the paper represents a basic contribution to the realization of 3-D digital filters.
