Let \(R=R(T,V)\) denote the number of gaps of length at least \(V\) between consecutive zeros of \(\zeta (+it)\) in the interval \([0,T]\). It is proved that uniformly \[ R \ll TV^{-2}\min (\log T, V^{-1} \log^5T) \] for any \(V>0\). The analogous problem is also discussed for Dirichlet series associated with cusp forms. Let \(a(n)\) be Fourier coefficients of a cusp form of weight \(\kappa\) \((\geq 12)\) for the full modular group, and let \(\phi(s) = \sum^{\infty}_{n=1} a(n)n^{-s}\) \((\text{Re}\, s > (\kappa +1)/2)\). Suppose that the \(a(n)\)'s are real, and denote by \(R\) the number of gaps of length at least \(V\) between consecutive zeros of \(\phi (\kappa /2+it)\) in the interval \([0,T]\). Then we have uniformly \[ R \ll \min (TV^{-2} \log T, T^2V^{-6} \log^6T). \]
