The projection underlying a decompositions \(X=J_ 1\oplus _{\infty}J_ 2\) of a Banach space \(X\) is called an \(M\)-projection. The main theorem of this note is slightly more general than the statement that on the space \(L(X,Y)\) of bounded operators from \(X\) to \(Y\) all \(M\)- projections are inner, i.e. they are inducedby decompositions of the form \(Y=J_ 1\oplus _{\infty}J_ 2\) or \(X=J_ 1\oplus _ 1J_ 2\), respectively. As a byproduct, we obtain some theorems of the Banach-Stone type for spaces of bounded operators. We furthermore show that, whenever \[ X\otimes _{\pi}Y=L_ 1\oplus _ 1L_ 2, \] there is a decomposition \(X=J_ 1\oplus _ 1J_ 2\) such that \[ L_ i=J_ i\otimes _{\pi}Y, \] provided that the Banach space \(Y\) cannot be decomposed in this way.
