    Let \(T: X\to Y\) be a bounded linear operator where X and Y are Banach spaces. Let \(J_ X\) denote the canonical injection of X into X'' and define \(\bar T: X''/J_ XX\to Y''/J_ YY\) by \(\bar T(x''+J_ XX):= T''x''+J_ YY\) \((x''\in X'').\) The authors establish the equivalence of the following three properties for T: (i) T factors through a quasi-reflexive Banach space, (ii) \(\dim R(\bar T)<\infty,\) (iii) There exists a nonnegative integer n for which T is n-weakly compact, i.e. T maps bounded sets into sets which are quasi-weakly compact of order n in the sense of [\textit{J. R. Retherford} and \textit{R. J. Fleming}, Math. Ann. 182, 45-54 (1969; Zbl 0174.438)].
