    The main result of the first part of the paper gives a certain correspondence between holomorphic Hilbert modular forms of half-integral weight and holomorphic Hilbert modular forms of even integral weight and is a generalization of the well-known ``Shimura correspondence'' in the case of elliptic modular forms [the author, Ann. Math. (2) 97, 440--481 (1973; Zbl 0266.10022); \textit{S. Niwa}, Nagoya Math. J. 56, 147--161 (1975; Zbl 0303.10027); \textit{J.-L. Waldspurger}, J. Math. Pure Appl. (9) 59, 1--132 (1980; Zbl 0412.10019)]. The second part of the paper deals with arithmetic properties of special values of the Rankin convolution series \({\mathcal D}(s;f,g)\) attached to Hilbert modular forms of half-integral weight \(f\) and \(g\), which are Hecke eigenforms. For critical values \(s\), it is proved that \({\mathcal D}(s;f,g)\) is an algebraic number times a ``period'' associated to \(h\), where \(h\) is a primitive integral weight modular form attached to \(f\). In the case of elliptic modular forms such a result was proved by the author [J. Math. Soc. Japan 33, 649--672 (1981; Zbl 0494.10018)].
