The following theorem is proved: The \(n\times n\)-matrix equation \(X^ mA_ 0+X^{m-1}A_ 1+...+A_ m=0\) has a real matrix solution X iff there exists a decomposition \(A(x)=(Ex-B)D(x),\) where B is a complex matrix such that the Smith matrix of Ex-B is real.
