The quantum inverse scattering method is a procedure for constructing the eigenfunctions for quantum chain Hamiltonians by means of an algebraic ``Bethe ansatz''. The norms of these eigenfunctions enter into the calculation of correlation functions for the lattice models associated with the Hamiltonian (which is related to its transfer matrix). The application of this procedure to the XXX and XXY Heisenberg chains is reviewed in this paper and aspects of the bound states of various numbers of elementary excitations are discussed. The principal content of this article is the derivation of an expression for the norm of the bound state wave functions in terms of certain Jacobian determinants arising in the Bethe ansatz algebra.
