Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold. To this manifold its volume, its diameter and the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian can be associated. There is the following basic question. What is the relation between these three quantities? There was an answer to this question when (M,g) is a symmetric space of rank 1. Now, we can state the main results. i) Let M be an arbitrary compact manifold, and \(M_ i\) a family of finite coverings of M. If there exists \(C>0\) such that \(\lambda_ 1(M_ i)>C\), then there exist positive constants a, b, and c such that \[ a\quad <\quad [(\log (vol(M_ i))+c)/diam(M_ i)]\quad >\quad b. \] ii) for each n, there exists a compact hyperbolic n-manifold N and coverings \(N_ i\) of N such that (\(\alpha)\lambda_ 1(N_ i)\to 0\), as \(i\to \infty\). (\(\beta)\) There exists \(C>0\) such that \(\log (vol(N_ i))/diam(N_ i)>C.\) iii) For each \(n\geq 2\), let us choose generators for \(SL(n,{\mathbb{Z}})\). Then there is a constant \(C_ n\) depending only on n and the choice of generators, such that \(diam(SL(n,{\mathbb{Z}}/p))<C_ n \log p.\)
