The paper provides a systematic review of the literature associated with the modelling and optimization of large-scale systems, focusing on research based on the hierarchical multi-objective approach, the overlapping decomposition approach, and the multimodel approach. The key results developed in these research areas are reported, and in particular the major accomplishments within the goal programming approach, the utility function approach, the weighting method approach, the trade-off method approach, the generating method approach and hierarchical holographic modeling in the general framework of hierarchical multiobjective analysis are surveyed. Also some suggestions for future research are given, and a list of recently published papers on this subject is included.
