The author proves the hypothesis of J. Dixmier that each primitive, completely prime ideal of the universal enveloping algebra U(\({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}}))\) of the Lie algebra \({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\) is induced in the following sense: For a given ideal I of this type, there exist a parabolic subalgebra \({\mathfrak q}\) of \({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\) and 1-dimensional representation E of \({\mathfrak q}\) such that I is precisely the annihilator of the representation of \({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\), induced from E. One of the main steps in the proof of this theorem is the following interesting fact: Let \({\mathfrak p}\) be a subalgebra of \({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\), the stabiliser of a point in the natural n-dimensional representation of \({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\), let I be any primitive, completely prime ideal of U(\({\mathfrak gl}_ n({\mathbb{C}}))\), then \(I\cap U({\mathfrak p})\) is the primitive, completely prime ideal of U(\({\mathfrak p})\).
