A modified version of Powell-Zangwill's method for function minimization without calculating derivatives is proposed. The new method possesses the following properties: quadratic termination, global convergence for strictly con``good'' approximation tours for the asymmetric travelling salesman problem. A simple example shows that the given bounds are tight.
