The author reviews the main properties of short core models (which arise in the study of inner models with a sequence of measurable cardinals) and applies his theory to get estimates on the consistency strength of various combinatorial principles in terms of the existence of inner models with many measurable cardinals. The principles considered include instances of Chang's conjecture, ``accessible'' Jónsson cardinals, the free subset property and a non-closure property of elementary embeddings of the universe.
