    \textit{L. Hoehn} and \textit{I. Niven} [Math. Mag., 58, 151-156 (1985; Zbl 0601.26011)] proved for the geometric, harmonic and quadratic means and \textit{P. S. Bullen} [Math. Mag. (to appear)] for the (weighted) power means \[ M_ p(x_ 1,...,x_ n)=(\sum w_ kx^ p_ k)^{1/p}\quad (p\neq 0),\quad M_ 0(x_ 1,...,x_ n)=\prod x_ k^{w_ k}\quad (\sum w_ k=1) \] that \[ (1)\quad t\mapsto M_ p(x_ 1+t,...,x_ n+t)-t \] strictly increases for \(p<1\), strictly decreases for \(p>1\), and \[ (2)\quad \lim_{t\mapsto \infty}(M_ p(x_ 1+t,...,x_ n+t)- t)=\sum w_ kx_ k, \] [the latter has been proved also by \textit{J. L. Brenner}, Pi Mu Epsilon J. 8, 160-163 (1985; Zbl 0601.26012)]. The reviewer, \textit{L. Losonczi} and \textit{Zs. Páles} [General Inequalities 5, 459-461 (1987; preceding review); cf. also the reviewer and \textit{Zs. Páles}, Am. Math. Mon. 95 (1988)] have proved that (1) is strictly monotonic when M (no parameter p needed) satisfies a Minkowski inequality and (2) holds when M is homogeneous of first degree and differentiable at (1,...,1) with \(w_ k=\frac{\partial M}{\partial x_ k}(1,...,1)\) and \(M(1,...,1)=1.\) [\textit{J. L. Brenner} and \textit{C. Carlson}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 123, 265-280 (1987; Zbl 0614.26002) proved this last result generalizing (2) and more under partially stronger conditions.] After proving the strict monotonicity of (1) for weighted power means again, the author defines \[ M_{p,q}(x_ 1,...,x_ n;t)=([\sum w_ k(x^ q_ k+t)^{p/q}]^{q/p}-t)^{1/q} \] if \(p\neq 0\), \(q\neq 0\), with appropriate limits when \(p=0\) or \(q=0\), and shows for \(q\neq 0\) that \(M_{p,q}(x_ 1,...,x_ n;t)\) tends to \(M_ q(x_ 1,...,x_ n)\) strictly monotonically as \(t\to \infty\).
