The exact boundary controllability problem for the semilinear wave equation is studied. We consider both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. A variant of the Hilbert uniqueness method of J. L. Lions is presented. The exact controllability is proven when the nonlinearity is asymptotically linear. On the other hand, local controllability results are proven for a large class of nonlinearities.
