A 3-knot is a pair (S 5,K) where K is a closed smooth orientable 3- manifold, and an algebraic 3-knot is such a pair arising as the link of an isolated singularity of a complex analytic function. It has been known that every algebraic 3-knot is a simple fibered knot, meaning that S 5-K is fibered over the circle with simply connected fibre and K is connected. Here it is shown that for every closed orientable 3-manifold K, there exists a simple fibred knot (S 5,K') with K' diffeomorphic to K. Furthermore, infinitely many examples are given of algebraic 3-knots which are decomposable in the sense that they can be expressed as the connected sum of two nontrivial simple fibred 3-knots. As the author points out, the question of decomposability of algebraic knots had already been settled in all other dimensions. Finally, it is shown that if two simple fibred 3-knots have integrally congruent Seifert matrices, and the submanifolds are diffeomorphic homology 3-spheres, then the knots are isotopic.
