The development of displacement finite element models for the nonlinear analysis of a solid body under external loads have been given by numerous investigators, but none of these have addressed mixed models for plane elasticity problems. \textit{G. Herrigmoe} and \textit{P. G. Bergan} [Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 7, 201-217 (1976; Zbl 0323.73060)] presented an incremental mixed variational principle and corresponding finite element model for solid bodies, but gave no numerical examples or comments on implementation. \textit{J. Haslinger} and \textit{I. Hlavacěk} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 86, 99-122 (1982; Zbl 0486.73099)] presented a mixed formulation for the Signorini contact problem with prescribed normal contact forces but gave no numerical results. \textit{J. Tseng} and \textit{M. D. Olson} [Int. J. Numer. Methods Eng. 17, 991-1014 (1981; Zbl 0456.73055)] applied the mixed finite element model to several plane elasticity contact problems using the equations of linear elasticity along with an iterative scheme. The major objective of the present study is to develop a mixed finite element model based on the updated Lagrangian formulation of two- dimensional elasticity for large deformation analysis. The model is evaluated for its accuracy, and the advantages and disadvantages of the mixed model are illustrated through numerical examples.
