The authors note that for a perfect, or nearly perfect conductor, the current flows on the surface. They approximate the current distribution with a number N of loops of current on the surface. The magnitudes of the currents in the loops are arranged to be such that the magnitude of the magnitude field component normal to the plane of each loop at its centre is zero and the inductance is given in terms of the magnetic energy associated with the N loops. The final result is obtained by extrapolating for N tending to infinity. Results are given for three particular examples, but there is no detailed analysis for them. Results are also given which indicate the error for imperfect conductors when the skin depth is non-zero.
