The authors study the model problem of a spherically symmetric nonlinear scalar field that is coupled to a linear nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator. The paper starts with the description of the analytic nature of the model problem and the method for determining the causal solution in the outer region. Next, a numerical method is developed to calculate the behaviour of the model in the source region where the nonlinearity is strong and the motion is rapid. Finally, the authors discuss the results of matching the numerical and analytic causal solutions and how one may use the latter to check the accuracy of the former over a rather large region of overlap.
