The iterative solution of the system of algebraic equations resulting from the discretization of the convective and diffusive terms for the fluid flow equations is investigated. Several five- and nine-point schemes are considered. A strongly implicit procedure is described that solves the system of nine-point finite difference equations associated with the nine-point quadratic upstream weighted scheme for the discretization of the convective terms of the equations. A comparison of this method with other versions of the five-point strongly implicit procedures is performed for linear and nonlinear fluid flow problems. Comparison of the computing costs between the solutions of systems of equations with nine and five diagonals in the coefficient matrix, respectively, indicates only a small saving for the nine-diagonal system.
