This paper presents an exhaustive statistical analysis of alternatives in hominoid evolution followed by a discussion. Where necessary, detailed explanation of the biological data makes the paper readily accessible to a biologically naive statistician. Statistical tests that are applied to variants of a Markov model of evolutionary trees are standard, but the model itself incorporates the important notion of ``effective sequences'', sequences that strongly influence sequences subsequent to them in the DNA. The article can be used as an introduction to the statistical problems of evolutionary sequence analysis.
