Let R be a local noetherian ring and \(e_ i(R)\), \(i\geq 1\) its deviations. The author completely settles a question raised by a result by \textit{E. F. Assmus} jun. [Ill. J. Math. 3, 187-199 (1959; Zbl 0085.024)] and proves that no deviation \(e_ i(R)\) can vanish, if R is not a weak complete intersection. First steps to get that were taken by \textit{T. H. Gulliksen} [Math. Scand. 47, 5-20 (1980; Zbl 0458.13010)], \textit{C. Löfwall} [in Homotopie algébrique et algèbra locale, Journ. Luminy/France 1982, Astérisque 113-114, 263-267 (1984; Zbl 0569.17008)], \textit{L. Avramov} and the author [Comment. Math. Helv. 62, 169-184 (1987; Zbl 0624.13013)] and others.
