The main theorem of this paper is the following graded analogue to the classical Noether Skolem theorem: Theorem. Let \(R\) be a finite-dimensional central simple \(k\)-algebra graded by a finite group \(G\), \(k\) a field, and assume \(R(1)\) is a simple ring. Then the grading is inner if and only if \(k\subseteq R(1)\). The nontrivial part of the proof is the `if'. If \(R\) and \(R(1)\) are simple, then \(R\) is a crossed product over \(R(1)\), and \(E\), the centralizer of \(R(1)\) in \(R\), is a normal \(G\)-Galois extension of \(k\). The proof is then completed by the use of a lemma showing that a normal \(G\)-Galois extension of \(k\) contains elements \(a\) and \(b\) such that \(\sum_{g\in G}a^{gx}bg=\delta_{x,1}\). This theorem has been strengthened by the authors [in ``An addendum to a Noether Skolem theorem for group-graded rings'', J. Algebra 120, No. 2, 414-415 (1989; Zbl 0664.16001)] to \(R\) strongly graded over \(R(1)\), \(R\) a crossed product being a special case of \(R\) strongly graded.
