Let T be a c.n.u. contraction on Hilbert space, and let \(u=(u_ 1,...,u_ n)\) be an n-tuple of \(H^{\infty}\)-functions. The authors calculate various joint spectra of u(T) and then apply the results to study the spectral and index theories of elementary operators associated with n-tuples of this type. The joint spectra of u(T) are calculated in terms of certain compact subsets of the maximal ideal space of the algebra \(H^{\infty}\). When T is the unilateral shift on \(H^ 2({\mathbb{T}})\), spectral results are obtained for n-tuples of analytic Toeplitz operators. For instance, \(\sigma_ H(T_ u)=\sigma_ T(T_ u)=u({\mathbb{D}})^-\), where \(\sigma_ H\) and \(\sigma_ T\) denote the Harte and Taylor spectra, respectively. The results in this paper generalize those in [\textit{C. Foiaş} and \textit{W. Mlak}, Stud. Math. 26, 239-245 (1966; Zbl 0146.126)] for single operators, and in [\textit{L. Fialkow}, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 35, 73-102 (1986; Zbl 0628.47025)] for elementary operators with symbols analytic in a neighborhood of the spectrum. For related work, the reader is referred to [\textit{K. Rudol}, Bull.
