This survey on recent results on (maximal) subgroups of the finite simple groups and their groups of automorphisms is appropriately divided into four sections on (1) alternating groups, (2) classical groups, (3) exceptional groups of Lie type, and (4) sporadic groups. In cases (1) and (2) there are general types of subgroups that are usually maximal subgroups with explicit lists of exceptions; however these general types may not be given by explicit lists (except for specific groups of small degree). Unlike the alternating and classical groups, there is no definitive subgroup structure theorem for the exceptional groups. Among the sporadic groups information is incomplete only for \(Fi'_{24}\), B, and M. Table 6 on amendments to the list of maximal subgroups in the ATLAS [Zbl 0568.20001] should include the addition of two further classes for \(J_ 4\) [see ref. 58] and the deletion of some of the 3-locals for \(Co_ 1\) [\textit{R. A. Wilson}, J. Algebra 113, 261-262 (1988)]. There are 114 references, many ``to appear''. Some of these now have appeared; Ref. 37: Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 37, 419-435 (1986); ref. 52: J. Algebra 110, 173-242 (1987; Zbl 0623.20031); ref. 53: J. Algebra 115, 1-31 (1988); ref. 54: J. Algebra 117, 30-71 (1988); ref. 58: Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. There is a survey of local maximal subgroups of finite simple groups by \textit{M. W. Liebeck} [pp. 455-461 in: Representations of Finite Groups, Proc. Conf., Arcata/Calif. 1986, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 47 (1987)] and on maximal subgroups of alternating and symmetric groups by \textit{M. W. Liebeck} - \textit{C. E. Praeger} - \textit{J. Saxl} [ibid. 449-454]. \textit{R. H. Dye} [Geom. Dedicata 26, 361-364 (1988)] quickly proves the maximality of \(G_ 2(K)\) in \(P\Omega_ 7(K).\) The following are further references on sporadic groups. A survey by \textit{R. A. Wilson} [in: Proc. Groups, St. Andrews 1985, Lond. Math. Soc. Note Ser. 121, 352-358 (1986; Zbl 0604.20020)]; \textit{W. Lempken} on \(J_ 4\) [Zbl 0605.20012)]; \textit{A. J. Woldar} on Ly [Zbl 0615.20011]; \textit{S. P. Norton} on \(Fi_{24}\) [Geom. Dedicata 25, 483-501 (1988)]; \textit{R. A. Wilson} on \(Co_ 1\) (see above), on \(Fi_{22}\) [Zbl 0551.20010], on \(Fi_{23}\) and \(Fi'_{24}\) [Zbl 0602.20020], on Th [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 44, 17-32 (1988)] on B [Invent. Math. 89, 197-218 (1987; Zbl 0622.20007] and on M [Zbl 0594.20012] and [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 44, 1-16 (1988; Zbl 0636.20014)]; \textit{Chat Yin Ho} on M [J. Algebra 115, 513-520 (1988; Zbl 0642.20014)].
