The present paper deals with the approximation of functions f, continuous in a compact set K (K simply connected with Jordan boundary and some regularity conditions on it) and holomorphic in the interior of K. An asymptotic formula for the error of the best polynomial approximation concerning functions with certain growth conditions is established. One of the results for a disk \(K=D_ r=\{z:| z| \leq r\}\) is, if we denote with \(c_ k\) the k-th Taylor coefficient and with \(T_ nf\) the n-th Taylor partial sum, the equivalence of the following properties \[ i)\quad E_ n[f,A(D_ r)]=O((r/R)^{n+1} e^{g(n+1)}),\quad n\to \infty,\quad R>r, \] \[ ii)\quad | c_ k| =O(e^{g(k)}/R^ n),\quad k\to \infty, \] \[ iii)\quad \| f-T_ nf\| =O((r/R)^{n+1} e^{g(n+1)}),\quad n\to \infty. \] And if one of this properties holds f will be holomorphic in the interior of \(D_ R\). Here \(E_ n[f,A(D_ r)]=\inf_{p_ n}\| f-p_ n\|\) denotes the best polynomial approximation: where the inf has to be taken over all polynomials of degree \(\leq n\), and we take the maximum norm on \(D_ r\). And g(k) denotes a function growing rather slowly to infinity. Using Faber series this theorem leads to the treatment of more general compact sets K. Furthermore the approximation with Lagrange interpolation polynomials is studied and the results improve a lot of well known results of other authors.
