We consider the numerical solution of the strong conservative system of hyperbolic partial differential equations describing the unsteady motion of converging-diverging cylindrical shock waves in an inviscid non-heat conducting fluid. The initial boundary value problem is treated by a 2-D time-dependent description. The basic equations of motion are formulated in 2-D Cartesian coordinates and a finite difference scheme of invariant character is applied to the discretized equations. This scheme has all the necessary features which guarantee an accurate, stable and symmetry preserving solution. We use the so-called Cartesian method to find the solution for cylindrical symmetry. The results of the numerical calculation are compared with the theoretical data from the literature. Differences between all the mentioned results and the present ones are due to the non-invariant character of the other difference methods applied.
