    The authors are interested in the large time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the following two Cauchy problems: \[ (PM)\quad u_ t=\Delta u^ m\quad in\quad {\mathbb{R}}^ n\times (0,\infty);\quad u(x,0)=\phi (x)\quad in\quad {\mathbb{R}}^ n \] and \[ (PMA)\quad v_ t=\Delta v^ m-v^ p\quad in\quad {\mathbb{R}}^ n\times (0,\infty);\quad v(x,0)=\phi (x)\quad in\quad {\mathbb{R}}^ n, \] where \(n\geq 1\), \(m\geq 1\), \(p>m+2/n\) and \(\phi\) (x) is a given bounded nonnegative function. They first prove that if \(| x|^ n \phi (x)\to A(| x| \to \infty)\), then for the solution u of (PM), \[ \lim_{t\to \infty}\tau^{\ell} | u(x,t)/B\ell_ n\tau -E(x,\tau)| =0, \] where \(t\cong B^{1-m}(\tau /(\ell_ n\tau)^{m-1})\), \(\ell =n/(2+n(m- 1))\), B is some constant depending on n, m and A, and E is the Barenblatt-Pattle solution with \(\| \phi \|_{L^ 1}=1\). This is different from its behaviour in the two cases (i) \(\alpha >n\) [cf. \textit{A. Friedmann} and the first author, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 262, 551-563 (1980; Zbl 0447.76076)]. (ii) \(0<\alpha <n\) [cf. \textit{N. D. Alikakos} and \textit{R. Rostamian}, Isr. J. Math. 47, 270-290 (1984; Zbl 0562.35050)], where \(\lim_{| x| \to \infty}| x|^{\alpha} \phi (x)=A>0\). Next, they apply the technique to the problem (PMA) and obtain similar results.
