This book is a pleasing mixture of simple and advanced theory applied to geophysical fluid dynamics. The reader is therefore not intimidated by formal mathematical proofs, although the approach is rigorous. The main purpose of the book is to describe the nature of atmospheric and oceanic motion and explain the different kinds of phenomena that can occur. Thus there are a group of chapters on the dynamics of large-scale atmospheric flows involving multiple flow regimes, instabilities, successive bifurcations and the transition into chaos. Another group of chapters deals with geomagnetism and the last group with climate dynamics. Considerable effort has been made to explain the subject to a student reader. The book is therefore to be thoroughly recommended, especially for its interesting bibliographic notes.
