The author constructs a James tree-like space [\textit{R. C. James}, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 80, 738-743 (1974; Zbl 0286.46018)] modelled on \textit{W. B. Johnson}'s modification of Tsirelson's space [Studia Math. 55, No.2, 201-205 (1976; Zbl 0362.46015)] rather than on \(\ell_ 2\). The space \(\Lambda_ T\) and its dual have many interesting properties. For example, \(\Lambda\) \(*_ T\) is nonseparable and contains no subsymmetric basic sequence. An example of a separable space with this property is one of the modifications of Tsirelson's space due to \textit{T. Figiel} and \textit{W. B. Johnson} [Compositio Math. 29, 179-190 (1974; Zbl 0301.46013)]. Interest is added to the author's result due to the fact that large nonseparable spaces contain subsymmetric basic sequences [\textit{J. Ketonen}, Fund. Math. 81, 291-303 (1974; Zbl 0288.46015)]. The author determines the basic structural results for \(\Lambda_ T\), such as the fact that all spreading models in \(\Lambda_ T\) are equivalent to the standard unit vector basis in \(\ell_ 1\), and that \(\Lambda_ T^{**}\sim \Lambda_ T\oplus \ell_ 1(\Delta)\), \(\Delta\) the Cantor set.
