The concept of preorderings of orderable fields (see \textit{A. Prestel} [Lectures of formally real fields, IMPA Lect. Notes 22 (1974; Zbl 0548.12010)]) is extended to arbitrary ternary rings. Applications concerning the Serre criterion, the number of orderings of a ternary ring and the existence of orderings for which a given place is order- preserving are given.
