An \(n\times n\) complex matrix A is called Hankel if it has the form \(A=(a_{i+k})\), \(i,k=0,...,n-1\). An \(n\times n\) complex matrix C is called Bézout if there are polynomials f, g of degree at most n such that \(C=(C_{ik})\), \(i,k=0,...,n-1\), the identity \[ \sum^{n- 1}_{i,k=0}c_{ik}x\quad iy\quad k=(f(x)g(y)-f(y)g(x))/(x-y) \] is fulfilled. In this paper, a characterization of Bézout matrices is presented as matrices the entries of which satisfy a certain system of homogeneous quadratic equations including necessary and sufficient conditions for Bézout. Also, the class of matrices which are both Hankel and Bézout is characterized, and formulae for the inversion of such matrices are given. The paper concludes with an analogous result for Toeplitz matrices in equivalent statements.
